Project Angels

Programme or Project Sponsor/SRO Training

We offer different levels of training / coaching for groups of Sponsors / SROs or individual 1:1 sessions, including:

  • Half day awareness of Sponsor / SRO role and key challenges
  • 1 day course focusing on the role of the Sponsor / SRO and expanding on the key behaviours, actions and decisions throughout the programme or project lifecycle.
  • 2 day course which can also be delivered as 4 half day modules or 2 x 1 day modules to suit availability and learning style of the attendees.
  • Individual coaching as a one off session or acting as “critical friend” to an SRO through the definition and delivery of a stretching programme or project

Our trainers / coaches are practitioners who have delivered and directed major change programmes themselves and understand the challenges an SRO faces.

We always put ourselves in the shoes of an SRO and how they should behave and act rather than the programme or project manager whose role has a very different focus.

Who should attend?

Anyone who will be acting as a Senior Responsible Owner (SRO) or Sponsor or a member of a Programme or Project Board or Steering Group. This will include all those responsible for setting a vision and providing direction, scrutiny and challenge to programmes or projects.

Availability

These workshops are available in-house only and will be tailored to match the needs of your organisation. To discuss dates and individual tailoring requirements please contact us.

1 day SRO / Sponsor / Board Awareness

Format

Usually 10am – 4pm but can be tailored to meet local needs in terms of duration and content. It has been run as a full day, half day or 2 hour session linked to a senior management team meeting.

Objectives

  • Understand the context of projects or programmes
  • Develop an understanding of the project or programme lifecycle
  • Bring clarity to governance and different organisation structures and typical roles / responsibilities
  • Understand the role of SRO / Project Board / Programme Board / Steering Group
  • Understand how a coalition of leadership and management is required to deliver a project or programme
  • Plan and Monitor projects or programmes as an SRO
  • Understand the need to engage stakeholders and communicate effectively

2 day SRO / Sponsor / Board Practitioner Workshop

Format

Provided as a set of four modules, which can be run as two full days, four half days or two single days over a period of time to suit local diaries and availability. Releasing senior managers from their day jobs for 2 full days can often be difficult, in which case four half days spaced over a month may be a more practical approach. We can also provide 1:1 coaching sessions.

Attendees will learn from both the training facilitator and each other, through input of knowledge, group discussion and a series of group exercises which can be based on a local scenario. In the absence of a tailored company method we will use the OGC MSP® or PRINCE2® approach and terminology.

Modules

  • Module 1 – Role of the SRO, Vision and Benefits, Leadership, Introduction to Programmes and Projects lifecycles and key documents, common causes of failure
  • Module 2 – People issues in Programmes and Projects, organisation structures, roles / responsibilities, stakeholder engagement, managing resistance to change and communications planning
  • Module 3 – The SRO’s role in Starting Up or Defining a project or programme
  • Module 4 – The SRO’s role in the delivery journey through to Closure and Evaluation
